On the 5th and 6th of November the Watch This Space team will unveil their most ambitious and exciting project to date. “Watch This Space: Lyveden New Bield” will offer a dazzling, dynamic and sometimes gruesome alternative to the usual bonfire night festivities. A mixture of fireworks, dramatic lighting, projection, original soundtrack and an exploration of the buildings direct links to the gunpowder plot of 1605 promises to be THE bonfire night show to see of 2009. “Sir Thomas Tresham’s delight, skill and misfortune are all epitomised in Lyveden New Bield. When one first sees its skeleton silhouetted against the skyline, it looks less like an Elizabethan ruin than a house interrupted in the process of building. And that in fact is what it is. When Tresham died in Septempber 1605, the masons laid down their tools, never to take them up again. There the lodge stands in suspended animation” Mark Girouard Lyveden New Bield was intended to be a garden lodge and a testament to a family’s faith in a time of religious oppression. Persecuted for their catholic faith Thomas Tresham and his son, Francis Tresham plaid a huge part in the events leading up to the gunpowder plot, culminating in Francis’s head being displayed on a spike due to his part in the conspiracy.
